Weekend Journal: PAWS Chicago’s Holiday Adopt-a-Thon Is Next Weekend!

FIRST GUEST: Sarah McDonald, Associate Director of PAWS Chicago

‘Tis the season to be merry! And nothing makes you feel merrier than helping save homeless animals.

Sarah tells us about four ways to get in the spirit with PAWS Chicago this holiday season:

  1. Donate – Whether you’re giving a meaningful holiday gift from PAWS Chicago’s giving guide (like providing a microchip or sponsoring a spay/neuter surgery), or you’re making a donation in honor of a friend or loved one, your dollars will be much appreciated!
  2. Volunteer/Foster – Many staff members and volunteers at PAWS Chicago will be traveling during the holiday season, so they are in need of more volunteers this time of year. If you’re sticking around town and you love animals, apply here. Have room in your home to become a foster? You’ll not only be giving a homeless pet some much-needed TLC, but you’ll also open up a space at the shelter. In other words, you’re helping TWO animals! Learn more here.
  3. Shop PAWS Chicago’s Holiday Gifts – I’ve got two words for you: doggie hoodie. Now, your pooch can stay warm on all early morning and late night walks! Plus, holiday mugs, cozy tees, calendars, holiday cards, and so much more. You’ll definitely find something for everyone on your list! Start shopping!
  4. Adopt – Check out PAWS Chicago’s 9th annual Holiday Adopt-a-Thon on Friday, December 9th and Saturday, December 10th at the Lincoln Park Adoption Center (1997 N. Clybourn Avenue). They’ll be open from 11:00 am – 11:00 pm on both days, so take advantage of their extended hours! See some of their adoptable pets here.

SECOND GUEST: Scott Schroeder, Executive Vice President and Chief Brand Officer of Garrett Popcorn Shops

Now you can enjoy your favorite popcorn and help other at the same time!

Garrett’s has partnered with Feeding America. You can help end hunger in America one tin at a time! Visit any of their Chicagoland locations, or shop online.

THIRD GUEST: Amanda Bickell, co-founder of the Bryan and Amanda Bickell Foundation

Adoptable doggies + Chicago Blackhawks = Perfect Christmas Gift

Once again, the Bryan and Amanda Bickell Foundation has put together another stellar calendar featuring adoptable pooches posing with members of the Blackhawks and Bears, as well as cast members of Chicago Fire and Chicago PD! The best part? Proceeds benefit the programs at the Bickell Foundation which help formerly abused children and dogs.

The 2017 Bickell Foundation calendar is available for pre-order right now, which you’ll want to take advantage of because all pre-order customers are eligible to win a calendar signed by everyone in it! Check out bickellfoundation.org/calendar to pre-order and see a teaser video of the photo shoot.

Bryan Bickell, formerly #29 of the Chicago Blackhawks, may be a part of the Carolina Hurricanes, but he’ll always be a Blackhawk to us! The Bickell Foundation is still based in Chicago (and Ontario, Canada), finding homes for dogs, working to eliminate the wrongful stigma associated with “pit bull” type dogs, and helping formerly abused kids right here in Chicago.

Their Paws for Strength program takes place at the Hephzibah House in Oak Park, where formerly abused dogs who have been rehabilitated and now act as therapy dogs to help children who were abused. Learn more about the program and how you can get involved here.

Weekend Journal airs Sunday mornings at 6:30 on US99 and 6:00 on US99 HD2 The Wolf.
