Jennifer Hudson returns to Chicago for “Hatch Day.”

The tradition of giving out school supplies began six years ago in honor of Julian King, Hudson’s nephew who was killed in 2008 along with their brother Jason Hudson and mom Darnell Donerson.

Every year on Julian’s birthday, the Julian King foundation along with Hudson and her sister/Julian’s mom get together and give underprivileged kids in Chicago backpacks, school supplies and more.

“Julian loved going to school and learning,” the organization said in a press release. “Jennifer and Julia want to help other kids through his memory by making sure they have access to everything they need to have a successful school year.”

“Just trying to turn a negative into a positive,”  Hudson told WGN during the event. “My mother always told me, ‘Jenny, one thing about you, you always find the positive no matter how negative things may be.’”

Hudson’s goal is to “acknowledge the positive and encourage that, especially in the children.”
